THE DREAM IS OVER
Having won the Maxwell Trophy for the last 3 years Ayr had Greenacres to play last week and Lockerbie this week needing a total of 9 points in order to qualify for the finals at Hamilton next month - a big ask.
Greenacres arrived at Ayr last week having already qualified but were no less committed to winning. These games are usually tight affairs and it was no different against Greenacres with Rab Clark's rink winning and Neil Kennedy's and Murray Stevenson's having to settle for peels. However, 4 points from 6 at least gave us a fighting chance.
This week it was Lockerbie's turn to be hosted. In Richard Goldie's game the first 4 ends were all blanked whilst Rab Clark was running up a big score and Neil Kennedy was threatening to get away from his opposition. Rab's run continued and the Lockerbie rink conceded - 2 points in the bag. Meanwhile Richard was struggling and Neil was being pegged back. It all came down to the last end in both games when Richard managed 1 shot instead of the 2 he needed to peel and Neil's opposition got the 2 shots they needed to win so that both Richard and Neil finished 1 shot down.
So it's up to the girls in the Morton finals and the dream for the men is over for this year. However, after both the Greenacres and Lockerbie games we enjoyed good company and wish them both well in the finals.
Thanks to all the Ayr curlers who played over the season.
