A magnificent effort by the Stewarton Heather rink of Craig Reid, Alex Wilson, Mark Guthrie and Dougie Paton saw them lose the final of the Rink Championship at Forfar right at the death.
They went through their section with four wins from four to meet Meldrum and Daviout CC from Aberdeen in the quarter final which they won 6-5. On to the semi final against Cadder CC from Braehead and another nail biter but, again, the boys won through on the tightest of margins 5-4.
In the final they were up against Airleywight CC from Perth. The first two ends were blanked. In the next five ends singles were exchanged to leave Craig and the boys one up at 3-2 going into the last end but, crucially, without the hammer and, unfortunately, they gave up a two to go down 3-4. What a tremendous effort though by the Stewarton Heather rink, the more so bearing in mind that they gave up being present at their club’s 175th Anniversary Dinner.
There is no truth in the rumour that the boys opted for Forfar when they heard that Billy Howat was amongst the speakers at the dinner! Incidentally, the dinner at the Fenwick Hotel was a great success under the chairmanship of Davie Mundell, the club President. 150 guests were entertained by guest speakers Bert Thomson and Eric Rowe as well as Billy and full credit to Davie Mundell, Jim Kirkwood, Dougie Reid and the others on the committee for a marvellous finale to Stewarton Heather’s celebratory year.
Thanks to Andrew Kerr for the above report.
