Ice Rink Statement

AYR ICE RINK

9 Limekiln Road

Ayr

KA8 8DG

3rd December 2020

After trading successfully on the same site for 47 years Ayr Ice Rink, like many others, has been badly affected and brought to the brink of closure by Covid 19 and the ensuing restrictions.

It costs £950 EACH and EVERY DAY of the YEAR to maintain the ice and the whole business. With the limited use we have been permitted our income falls far short of that figure and the Board have therefore, reluctantly, taken the decision that the rink will remain closed. The alternative would have seen the rink closed permanently by Easter.

We need the figure skating, the ice hockey and, crucially, the curling all operating normally just to break even and it will be October next year before we can look forward to that, assuming all goes well as far as Covid is concerned.

To get to that point we intend cutting costs to the bare minimum but even taking such drastic action our reserves are not sufficient. To date there has been no indication of the necessary financial support from either the Scottish Government or the local Council and we now require to raise a minimum of £85K to ensure that Ayr Ice Rink has a future.

A fundraising group will be formed from all the users of the rink under the banner of SAVE AYR ICE RINK (SAIR as in it’s a sair fecht !). Once this group has met and agreed a way forward the support of the users and the wider community will be required to ensure that Ayr will continue to have an ice rink.
